Gary Flaxbard is a Zurich native who is a great-great grandson of the first German settler in Hay Township, Bishop John Oesch. While in Grade 13 at SHDHS in Exeter, his research project in History class was the history of Zurich. He attended what is now known as Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo, graduating with a B.A. in 1971, before moving on to Western in London to study law. While there, he was approached to participate in and lead a student group in the summer of 1972 under a Federal grant, studying industry in Hay Township, resulting in the publication of Hay Township … a study of industry, past and present in 1972. Gary completed his legal studies, became a lawyer, and practiced law in Waterloo Region from 1976 to 2020. He lives with his wife in Kitchener. In his retirement, he contributes items of historical interest to the Facebook Group, If You Grew Up In Zurich Ontario.
