Resources by Location

In each file by location there are subfiles for Cemeteries, Census, Church Histories, Church Records, Funeral Home Records, Other records and Town or Township Histories. These are photocopies donated to us that we have scanned – check the original source if copies not complete. If you know of records we could scan and add to this collection, please let us know [email protected]

Cemeteries – our cemetery transcriptions are available at https://ogs.on.ca/product-category/branch-publications/huron-branch/ In these files are any cemetery plot records or other information we have.

Census – Transcriptions of 1851 and 1861 censuses were done by Huron Co Branch members. Local transcribers are often better able to recognize names from challenging handwriting. The focus on this county brought forward names that were missed on the transcriptions and indexes done prior.  1871 census – missing names from Tuckersmith Township – when transcriptions were done (used by LAC, Ancestry, etc.) one of our members discovered there were names missing for Tuckersmith.

Church Histories – Religion was important to most of the early settlers in Huron County. Knowing what churches existed helps those researching their families look for possible records, affiliated groups, where they ancestors are buried, etc.  Churches were gathering places not only for spiritual needs, but often served as schools and social gatherings. Many churches have disappeared over the years. We want to preserve their history in our county. Most of the Roman Catholic histories and pictures are Courtesy and copyright of the Diocese of London’s Archive. Our sincere thanks to them and please cite them when using. Many of the photos of United Churches in Huron were taken by the late Steve Hearn and Ivan McClymont – thanks to Western Waterways Region of United Church of Canada for permission to share them – please cite them when using.

Church and Funeral Home Records – These were donated to us – do you know where we can find more?

Other – These include newspaper extractions, groups/clubs, etc.

Town or Township histories – We have many of the older histories, the newer ones are still under copyright, but should we get permission to use, will add as possible.
